There are two municipalities which lay in the Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada that are known as North Vancouver.  The first is the City of North Vancouver which is home to over 45,000 residents.  The second is the District of North Vancouver which is home to over 82,000 residents.  Along with the district of West Vancouver, these two municipalities are commonly referred to as the North Shore.

 

These two parts of the Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia, Canada have separate entities, as each has its own mayor, operations departments and council.  They do share however services such as the North Vancouver School District, the North Vancouver detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission.

 

The City of North Vancouver has a much more urban feel out of the two parts of North Vancouver, British Columbia.  The city is home to the majority of North Shore’s high rise buildings, commercial operations and rental properties.  Along with the District, industrial sites can be found along the shore of the Burrard Inlet.  These industrial areas of the city have started to convert into commercial and residential areas.  The City is known as the “downtown” of the North Shore areas.

 

The District of North Vancouver on the other hand is the larger of the two “North Vancouver’s”.  It’s bounded by the Capilano River to the west, Indian Arm to the east, the North Shore Mountains to the north and the Burrard Inlet to the south.  The District is home to over 82,000 residents which consist mainly of single-family residential housing.  The District has more than double the population of the City but with a much lower population density.  It’s local community hubs include commercial areas such as Lynn Valley and Edgemont Village.
